What we see most on refrigerators
Most no-cool calls aren't a dead compressor. Nine times out of ten it's the start relay (the little switch that kicks the compressor on), the condenser fan motor, or coils packed solid with dust. Arizona is hard on refrigerators. At 110 to 115 degrees the compressor barely gets a rest, and a unit in the garage is working in heat it was never built for.
Symptoms worth calling about
- Fridge side warm, freezer still cold
- Runs all the time, never shuts off
- Water under the crisper drawers
- Frost building up on the back wall
- Not cooling at all
- Noisy fan in the back
What is different about an Amana refrigerator
Amana fridges are simple Whirlpool-built machines that cool both sides from a single evaporator, the cold coil behind the freezer wall. That makes them quick to figure out, and the parts are cheap. If the fridge side is warm and the freezer is cold, look at the evaporator fan or a stuck damper (the little door that lets cold air into the fridge side), not the compressor. The cold is all made in one spot, and the trouble is almost always getting it over to the fridge side. Defrost is the other common call. A plugged defrost drain shows up as water under the crisper drawers, and it's about the cheapest repair on the whole fridge. On an Amana, the thing that matters most is the condenser coils (the grille of tubes under or behind the fridge), even more than on a better-built fridge. These are built to a price, so there's less room for error. Dust-packed coils in an Arizona garage will kill the compressor years early. Vacuuming the coils twice a year really does add life to one of these.

Amana refrigerator questions
My Amana fridge is warm on one side. Is the compressor going out?
Very unlikely. With one evaporator cooling both sides, that points to the evaporator fan or a stuck damper. Both are cheap Whirlpool parts.
Is an Amana refrigerator worth repairing?
For a fan, damper, drain or defrost problem, yes, at almost any age, because the parts are cheap. If the sealed refrigerant system fails (it has to be opened with special tools and training) and the fridge is past about eight years, usually not, and we'll tell you so.
Why is there water under the crisper drawers?
The defrost drain is plugged, usually with ice or gunk, not a broken part. It's about the cheapest repair on the whole fridge.
What's the best thing I can do to make it last?
Vacuum the condenser coils twice a year, especially if it's in a garage. On a budget fridge in Arizona heat, that's what decides whether the compressor lasts as long as it should.
