What we see most on washing machines

A washer that won't drain is a drain pump nine times out of ten, and what's in the pump is usually a sock, an underwire, or a handful of change. Banging on spin is normally worn suspension rods or shocks. Our hard water is rough on the water valves where the hoses hook on, too. They scale up and slow the fill.

Try this first Before you book a call Look for the small access panel at the front bottom, open the filter and clear it. Have a towel ready, because water will come out.

Symptoms worth calling about

  • Fills and drains but won't spin
  • Won't drain at the end
  • Leaks only on spin
  • Lid or door won't lock
  • Loud on the spin cycle
  • Won't agitate

What is different about a GE washing machine

GE washers come as classic top-loaders or as front-load and high-efficiency machines, and what breaks depends on the design, not the name. On top-loaders the lid switch is the most common call we get. The washer won't spin unless it can tell the lid is shut, so a bad switch gives you a washer that fills and drains but never spins. The drive belt and the motor coupling cover most of the rest. Front-loaders break like everybody else's. The drain pump filter catches coins and throws the same drain error as a dead pump. The rubber door seal tears along the bottom and only leaks when the drum spins hard. GE parts are easy to get for both kinds, so most of these get fixed in one visit instead of a second trip after we order parts.

GE washing machine questions

  • My GE top-loader fills and drains but won't spin. Why?

Most often the lid switch. The washer won't spin unless it can tell the lid is shut. A bad switch looks just like a spin problem, and it's a cheap part.

  • Why does it only leak when it spins?

On a front-loader that's almost always the rubber door seal. It tears along the bottom, so water only gets out when the drum spins hard, and never the rest of the cycle.

  • It won't drain. Is the pump gone?

On a front-loader, check the drain pump filter first. It catches coins and lint, and when it's clogged it throws the same error as a dead pump.

  • Is a GE washer worth repairing?

For most of its life, yes. Switches, belts, couplings, pumps and door seals are all cheap and easy to get.
