Sub-Zero Freezer Repair
Sub-Zero freezers across Pinal and Maricopa County. Flat rate quoted before anyone opens it up.
What we see most on freezers
Frost building up in a freezer is almost always the defrost system, usually the heater or the bimetal thermostat (a small heat switch clipped to the cooling coils). It's rarely the sealed refrigerant system. A freezer that can't hold temperature in an Arizona garage in July is often doing nothing wrong. It's rated for room temperatures it never sees out here.
Symptoms worth calling about
- Freezer slowly warming, compressor never stops
- Heavy frost on the coils or back wall
- Frost along one edge of the door
- Ice cream soft but the cabinet still reads cold
- Noisy or hot at the grille
- Door not sealing right
What is different about a Sub-Zero freezer
On a Sub-Zero freezer column, the sealed refrigerant system (which has to be opened with special tools and training) serves that cabinet alone. So a freezer that won't hold temperature isn't the airflow-and-damper problem it would be on a combo unit. The usual causes come in a predictable order. First a condenser packed with dust, then a defrost circuit that's quit, and only after that the sealed refrigerant system itself. The defrost problem is worth understanding because it looks like something much worse. When the defrost heater or its termination thermostat (the switch that ends each defrost) fails, frost builds up on the evaporator coil until air can't get through. The freezer warms slowly while the compressor runs without stopping. That looks exactly like a dying compressor, but it isn't one, so finding the real cause matters more than the symptom. Freezer-column door gaskets take more stress from the cold than the ones on the fridge side, and they go hard sooner. Frost along one edge of the door is usually the gasket, not the refrigerant system.

Sub-Zero freezer questions
My Sub-Zero freezer is warming but the compressor never stops. Is it the compressor?
Usually not. When the defrost heater or its termination thermostat fails, frost blocks the evaporator coil until air can't move through it. The cabinet warms while the compressor runs nonstop. It looks a lot like a failing compressor and costs far less to fix.
Why is frost forming along one edge of the freezer door?
That's almost always the door gasket. Freezer-column gaskets take more stress from the cold than the fridge side and go hard sooner, so they stop sealing at one edge first.
Is a Sub-Zero freezer column worth repairing?
Generally, yes. They're built to last twenty-plus years, and the common problems (condenser, defrost circuit, gaskets) are all repairs that stop well short of opening the sealed refrigerant system.
What should I check before I call?
Pull the grille and look at the condenser. If it's packed with dust, vacuum it and give the unit 24 hours. That alone fixes a good number of the calls we get in this climate.
